being lucky

I didn’t have the right equipment so I didn’t think I’d get it.

and as I often do . . . at the tenth hour

I read it was safe to use your camera at totality and the harsh light from the sun wouldn’t affect the camera or the lens.

so then I thought

what the heck?  I might as well give it a shot.

but, my lens wasn’t right . . . and  I didn’t expect much.

eclipes of the sun logo 4

as I often do . . . when I don’t think it will work & my expectations are low. . . I am surprised at how things work out.

My father used to say, “the harder I work the luckier I get. “

I feel like that with my camera most of the time.

I study, and study, and study.

and then

BAM!

there it is.

and I feel, Wow! so lucky.

Running late, road blocked because of a moving house . . . caught in a time warp & somehow we get there with a few minutes to spare.

Even though he’s one who has to figure out what is going on. . . he lets it go, relaxes and enjoys the night.

I’m out of sorts all week and see what should go better. It weighs on me.  I keep telling myself to find the blessings.  I fall short and never jot them down.   Some days I don’t look – many  slip away.

I read it again that morning;  give thanks in all circumstances. . .  I know this, I remind myself.

and then I’m chatting with Charming in the kitchen filled with warm morning light.  He tells me about his day to come,  and I almost miss the beautiful glow coming in. I look out. It startles me and I say,

Oh, . . . That’s so beautiful.

PSX_20160315_085939

I grab  the closest camera to me, my phone . . . I move away from the conversation so fast he thinks there is something wrong.

I run outside chasing the gift before the morning sunlight moves and the woods stop looking like a magical land.

and this glorious moment of fog, light and raindrops puts me back to where I need to be.

a little intimidated

I started taking a photography class online this week. To be totally honest. . . I find the whole thing kind of intimidating.     I mean, I have never had anyone really critique my photos before.

Ever!

The assignment for the week is summer.  It’s wide open.

eyes 2

My first thought for this homework was to take lots of shots of the kids at the pool. After all, what says summer more then a pool? But then, a South Carolina thundershower came out of nowhere,  and these are what I ended up submitting for the day.

After all – What says South Carolina Summers more then a thundershower coming out of nowhere?

Yesterday she wanted to stay with “the best Nana ever” for a little while.  But, the best nana wasn’t feeling well and wanted to lie down.  I told this girl of mine she had to come  home with me so  Nana could rest.

wind 4

Well . . . if you can believe it – she was grumpy about the whole thing.

wind 3

I then asked her if she wanted to blow  dandelion seeds around the yard while I took her photo – she put on a little tiny  smile and said,  “I guess so.”

and then she blew, and blew, and blew.

such babies. . .

Remember I told you on Mother’s Day Daisy had six puppies?  They are almost three weeks old now.

puppies

Yesterday,  I thought it might be a good idea to take them outside and let them play in a grassy, shady area. I put them inside a large wooden garden box to keep them safe while they were out there.

puppies 2

I thought they would love it outside and this was definitely the way to go because, after all they are puppies and puppies love being outside.

Right???

WRONG!

puppies 3

They were quite traumatized to find out they were puppies and didn’t like the feeling of the grass at all.

They hated it!

puppies 4

In fact they cried

and cried

and cried.

You never saw such babies in your whole life.

teaching in her Silence

I have told you before about my friends little girl  Leah.  She has Apraxia of Speech.

Leah making breakfast

  So, she doesn’t speak.

Talking to Liz

Needless to say, when Leah comes to play at our house – the house  is quite.

Making breakfast

One of the many things that strike me about Leah is how she loves.

She simply just LOVES – the way a person should.

_DSC0436

When I heard this quote yesterday by Blessed Mother Teresa . . . I couldn’t help but think of four year Leah  – Who teaches me so much in her silence.

Leah looking at Liz

“The fruit of Silence is prayer. The fruit of Prayer is faith. The fruit of Faith is love. The fruit of Love is service. The fruit of Service is peace.”

Floating New Year

New Years Eve Stevie Wonder and the gang set off floating lanterns instead of fireworks.

Floating lanterns seem fitting for us this year.
We have so many changes coming up. Friday Matthew and I leave for Kansas. He will be going to college at Benedictine this year. Remember, I told you he wants to study philosophy? Benedictine is a 1000 miles from our home.
I’m not at all worried about getting him there. I’m really looking forward to the drive. The thing that worries me the most is leaving the school without my little boy.  I keep on thinking: how do I just leave him there. . . 1000 miles from our home?
I keep telling myself – How can he set the world on fire if
his mom won’t let him? I can’t just keep him home forever. That wouldn’t be good
for anyone.  So we will be off – I may cry all the way home but, that’s okay to me –                      He’s ready to fly.
Oh! Yeah! Happy New Year Y’all!
